Chasing Dragons and Castles: 4 Days in Ljubljana & Bled, Slovenia

Slovenia might be one of Europe’s most underrated gems, and we found that out firsthand during our spring escape. From historic bridges guarded by dragons to emerald lakes cradled in the Alps, our journey through Ljubljana and Bled had it all: culture, charm, and a touch of cardio (thank you, Wings for Life Run). Here’s how we spent our 3.5 days soaking in Slovenia’s finest.

Day 1: Ljubljana Welcomes Us

We hopped on a Flixbus from Bratislava’s Nivy Bus Station, cruising across borders for 7.5 hours with just one 20-minute lunch break. At 33 EUR per person, it was a comfy and budget-friendly ride. Once we arrived at Ljubljana’s bus station, we made our way to our accommodation (Urko Apartments Ljubljana for 125.02 EUR for 2 nights for 2 persons) about 30 minutes away.

After a quick refresh, we hit the cobbled streets of the capital, starting with a stop to pick up our bibs for the upcoming Wings for Life World Run.

  1. Tivoli Park – This is Ljubljana's green lung and the perfect spot to ease into the city's vibe. It felt like walking through a laid-back gallery, with tree-lined paths, outdoor art, and locals lounging around with coffee. Did you know it dates back to the early 19th century and was designed in part by French engineer Jean Blanchard?

  2. Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) – Where else can you cross three bridges at once? Architect Jože Plečnik fused old and new by adding two footbridges to the original 1842 structure. It’s the perfect place to people-watch or strike a pose with the Ljubljanica River.

  3. Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) – Legend has it that when a virgin crosses the bridge, the dragons wag their tails. We can’t confirm that, but these iconic beasts are a symbol of the city—fierce and photogenic.

  4. Ljubljana Cathedral (St. Nicholas's Church) – The interior is a baroque feast for the eyes, with golden details and frescoes. Don’t miss the ornate bronze doors added in 1996 to mark Pope John Paul II's visit.

  5. Prešeren Square – Named after Slovenia’s national poet, this buzzing square is where locals and tourists gather. It’s got charm, street musicians, and that iconic pink Franciscan Church.

  6. City Museum of Ljubljana – A cool, modern museum with some seriously old-school artifacts. You can even see the world’s oldest wooden wheel, dating back over 5,000 years!

  7. National Gallery – Slovenia’s most important fine arts museum. It houses works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Perfect for art lovers or a quick culture break.

  8. Town Hall (Mestna hiša) – Built in the 15th century, this is still Ljubljana’s administrative HQ. It has a blend of Gothic and Baroque styles and often hosts exhibitions.

  9. Ljubljana Castle – We wrapped up the day with a sunset from this hilltop fortress. Whether you hike up or take the funicular, the panoramic view is worth it. The castle has been watching over the city since the 11th century!

Day 2: Running and Roaming

We woke up to adrenaline and sunshine. The Wings for Life Run took us through Ljubljana and its surroundings, and we proudly clocked in 12 km.

  1. Loo-blah-nah Bar – Beer never tasted so good. This stylish bar was the perfect reward after the run. Local brews, cozy vibe. Especially we enjoyed Union beer 🤩.

After showering and recovering our legs, we strolled deeper into Ljubljana's culture:

  1. Metelkova Mesto (AKC Metelkova) – A former army barracks turned autonomous art zone. Think Berlin meets Ljubljana: colorful murals, recycled sculptures, and an air of rebellion. It used to be squatted in the 90s; now it's one of the city's top alternative hotspots.

  2. Špica Park – For sunset, we headed to this peaceful riverside park. Once a city port, it’s now a dreamy green hangout with willows and couples lounging along the Ljubljanica.

We closed the day the way any Slovenian evening should end — with another Union beer and happy legs.

Day 3: Rainy Reflections in Bled

Despite the weather turning gloomy, we weren’t going to miss a visit to Slovenia’s fairytale lake. We took a short ride by bus from Ljubljana to Bled (price 5.90 EUR per person) and checked into a cozy apartment (Apartmaji Pri Kokolu for 1night 91.26 EUR for 2 persons) where we were very welcomed with local cake and beer and coffee 🤩.

  1. Lake Bled – Famous for its island church and medieval cliffside castle. While the rain kept us from rowing out or hiking up, we still enjoyed the peaceful lakeside walk. Legend says that if you ring the bell at the Church of the Assumption, your wishes will come true.

Day 4: Scenic Farewell

With some rest in our legs and memories in our minds, we took off from Lesce-Bled train station toward Villach, then continued to Vienna and finally Bratislava. Slovenia left us with full hearts, sore feet, and dreams of returning for more. (Bled -> Vienna costs us 29.90 EUR per person)
